Coming Soon! Writing Folklore is a new Folklore writing group supporting academic and creative writing related to Folklore and Folklore Studies and Research. Led by our wonderful members Abbi Flint and Ella Ruby Self with Cath Bannister, the group will hold regular in-person writing sessions on campus from November 2025. These will be open to PGRs, ECRs and academics / folklore researchers, and will provide opportunities to come together and write. So whether you are working on academic articles or papers, or on creative and personal projects related to all things folklore, please come along. There'll be more information coming soon about our taster session and how to get involved.
PGRs, ECRs and Academics at TUOS are invited to our first taster meeting for our new writing group 'Writing Folklore' on 14th November, 10am - 11.30am at the Doctoral School Centre, next to Jessop West building.
The group aims to be a friendly, inclusive space for creative and academic writing on folklore studies and folklore themes. It offers opportunities for quiet reading and writing, conversation and networking with others interested in folklore, and activities to support writing. Plus whatever you would like to include!
Join us for our first drop in session for introductions, a flash writing exercise and ideas sharing about where we can take this new group.

WRITING FOLKLORE first meeting 14th November, 10.00am - 11.30am at the Doctoral School Centre, next to Jessop West, TUOS.
WELCOME to the CFRC Writing Group! Held monthly in the Doctoral School Centre (found next to Jessop West) this group is structured quiet time for writing, reading, conversation and connection with fellow scholars and students interested in, or studying, all things folklore. The sessions will be around two hours with time for networking built in!
Once a semester there will be a structured workshop session led by one of the group facilitators, Abbi Flint, Ella Ruby Self or Catherine Bannister. These will range from exploring the creative side of folklore, prose, poetry and hybrid talks and writing, to the critical side with contextualising and analysing pre-existing writings. We will also be looking into having sessions outside when the weather allows!
The group is open to PGRs, ECRs and academic staff at The University of Sheffield, so please invite anyone you think might be interested to our first meeting. You'll need to bring your U-Card for entry into the space.
We look forward to seeing you there!
